On March 8, 2021, Kim Willsher shared the tragic story of Sam Paty, whose life’s end was sparked by a lie.* Sam Paty was a teacher, and his class included a 13-year-old truant girl known as Z. The school suspended Z because she repeatedly failed to turn in assignments. To avoid her father discovering the truth about her suspension, she claimed her teacher had violated her religious rights in one of his lessons. Instead of the father following up, the father posted a Facebook rant, and a radicalized teen took the rant as a cue to handle the situation. The result was the tragic death of teacher Sam Paty. He was a husband and the father of a young child. This series of events started because of one lie from a 13-year-old girl who did not want to do her schoolwork and receive disapproval from her father.
What does a lie cost? In the instance of the story of Z, it cost her teacher’s life. In this week’s bible study lesson, Where Is Your Integrity? Denying Jesus’s Resurrection when You Know the Truth, it was/is costing people’s eternal life, perhaps. The chief priests paid guardsmen, who had witnessed the great events surrounding Jesus’s resurrection, to lie about what happened. Even today, that lie still carries weight. Still, some people don’t believe that Jesus rose. But what would have happened if the truth had been told?
Whether you have held back the truth, hidden the truth, or just told a bold lie, ask yourself what it is costing those who believe the lie over the truth. Step up and change the tide of events. You can help save a life.
